چکیده
A substantial literature on the association between sociability and drinking level exists, but it has produced inconsistent and unremarkable results. The purpose of this study was to provide evidence for the multidimensionality of sociability and to test the hypothesis that the various dimensions are differentially related to drinking level. Measures of six dimensions of sociability were derived from the items of existing measures of sociability and were correlated with the drinking levels of college students, both male and female. Although some weak associations were found, none of the six dimensions of sociability examined had better explanatory power than more traditional measures of sociability.

متن کاملDo different types of social identity moderate the association between perceived descriptive norms and drinking among college students?
Perceived descriptive norms are one of the strongest predictors of college drinking. Social Identity Theory posits that much of our identity is based on groups with which we affiliate. Prior research suggests that there is an association between perceived descriptive norms and drinking among those who identify more strongly with the normative referent group. However, no studies to date have exa...
متن کاملThe effects of merit-based financial aid on drinking in college.
We study the effect of state-level merit aid programs (such as Georgia's HOPE scholarship) on alcohol consumption among college students. Such programs have the potential to affect drinking through a combination of channels--such as raising students' disposable income and increasing the incentive to maintain a high GPA--that could theoretically raise or lower alcohol use. We find that the prese...
